Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce called on the incumbent Jed Steer despite the acquisition of two goalkeepers this window.

6.5. Two saves from three shots-on-target, one of the remarkable kind. Steer recovered well after Hull’s opener. He wasn’t exactly at fault for Evandro’s goal, but he could have punched the ball farther. It also showed his physical limitations as a smaller goalkeeper. Very quick and agile off his line. The real question, however, is how many more games, if any, will Steer receive?. GK. Aston Villa. JED STEER

7.5. Alan Hutton scored his first goal in almost four years. Hull’s Stephen Kingsley and Todd Kane struggled getting wide, thus bringing them centrally on the pitch. Hutton was a huge part of that. Booked for celebration.. RB. Aston Villa. ALAN HUTTON

RCB. Aston Villa. TOMMY ELPHICK. 7.0. Shaky early on, but Elphick recovered nicely after scoring his first Aston Villa goal. Fraizer Campbell caused the central defensive pairing to hesitate with hold-up play, though.

4.5. James Chester was perhaps the worst player on the pitch. When you can win by multiple goals with your second-to-best player disappearing, things are going well. Worth noting Chester is not nearly as effective playing on the left-hand side at centre-back (neither is Elphick).. LCB. Aston Villa. JAMES CHESTER

Aston Villa. NEIL TAYLOR. 5.0. 69% passing needs improvement. Neil Taylor defended well in the air, but he both lost players in space and can’t control possession in tight spaces.. LB
