Infrequent Republic of Ireland international David McGoldrick is a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Ipswich Town. Aston Villa is one of a half-dozen Championship club kicking the tires on the forward.

Aston Villa need reinforcements. Aston Villa can only really afford free agent and loan reinforcements for the time being. As a centre-forward at the age of 30 with a decent track record, long-time Ipswich Town player David McGoldrick fits that criteria.

According to Bristol Live, McGoldrick is a potential target for Aston Villa.

Name: David McGoldrick

Age: 30 / D.O.B: 29 November

Position: CF / Wing

McGoldrick played in 22 Championship matches last season (18 starts), compiling 1,617 minutes of football. WhoScored liked his game well enough to give him a 6.85 aggregate as he played mostly centre-forward with a little bit of wing play (akin to Lewis Grabban). He scored six goals and assisted on a further four.

The season prior, the Republic of Ireland international scored five and assisted three across 2,381 minutes.

Villa Verdict:

It’s hard to say “pass” with seemingly so few options available, but a 30-year old injury-prone centre-forward should be well down on Aston Villa’s totem pole. With Jonathan Kodjia, Scott Hogan, Keinan Davis, and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy still on-board for now, the forward position can take a back seat to other positions in dire need for improvement.

Of note, a goalkeeper is needed to compete with Jed Steer following Sam Johnstone’s arrival at West Bromwich Albion.

Moreover, a new left back is sorely missed. To round out the first-team, Villa need at least one, possibly two centre backs and reinforcements on the wing. While McGoldrick seemingly would aid Villa over the course of a 46-match season, the effect would probably be less than improvements in other positions.

Every club passed in the January window after Ipswich put a £500,000 price on the free agent’s services.
