Aston Villa: Tuesday news and notes from the international break
By Josh Tonti
Former Aston Villa left back Jordan Amavi was called into the French National Team Tuesday afternoon. Amavi takes the place of injured fullbacks Layvin Kurzawa and Benjamin Mendy.
The curse of Aston Villa is all but confirmed.
Jordan Amavi received his first ever France National Team call-up following the player’s season-long loan to Olympique de Marseille. Congratulations to Jordan, but this pretty affirms that most Villa supporters were wrong in their evaluation of the player.
Whether Amavi did not fit Bruce’s scheme or Villa were not talented enough to play to his strengths, one thing is clear: Amavi is a talented player.
In other news, we are one day removed from important international football qualifiers. Syria and Australia battle in their initial leg of AFC FIFA World Cup play-off. Due to the current political climate in Syria, the country has been playing their matches in Malaysia. The match is stream-able on WatchESPN at 8:30AM EST, Thursday, October 5th.
Socceroos captain Mile Jedinak misses out following a re-aggravation of his previous groin injury. He is staying in Birmingham to ramp up rehabilitation efforts with Villa.
Aston Villa duo Neil Taylor and James Chester are with the Wales senior team as a spot for the 2018 FIFA World Cup reaches its conclusion. Wales sit in second-place, four points behind leaders Serbia. The Dragons face Georgia and Ireland, the latter of whom lay just one point behind. And, oh, they have to do this all without Gareth Bale
Good luck.
Not to be outdone, the Emerald Isle features three Aston Villa senior players: Glenn Whelan, Conor Hourihane, and uncapped Scott Hogan feature in Martin O’Neill’s final squad.
Its’ Hogan/Hourihane/Whelan vs. Chester/Taylor for a second-place playoff in UEFA qualifying most likely. However, both sides need enough points to not be the only second-place finisher not to advance as only 8/9 make it. Right now, Wales are level with Bosnia in Group H for joint-lowest.
Jonathan Kodjia and Ahmed Elmohamady return to their respective national teams, too. The Golden Elephants of the Ivory Coast need to fend off a challenge from Mali before their final fixture in November against Morocco.
Likewise, Egypt can secure their ticket to next summer’s World Cup with a victory over Congo if Uganda fails to beat Ghana in Kampala.
