While simultaneously interested in Ross McCormack, Sunderland is aiming to bring Aston Villa center back Tommy Elphick on loan.

Tommy Elphick is a forgotten man in Steve Bruce’s plans. In The Carabao Cup second-round thrashing of Wigan, Elphick played the full ninety minutes to attract potential suitors.

With luck, Elphick and the Villa defense performed well. Now, after long being linked to Birmingham City and Harry Redknapp, The Black Cats of Sunderland want the former Aston Villa captain on loan.

The report indicates the two sides are trying to come to a loan arrangement before Thursday’s summer window deadline. The hold-up is presumably over who takes on what in terms of wages – as well as any possible options-to-buy/leasing payment.

More from Claret Villans

Elphick will always hold the distinction of being Dr. Tony Xia’s first ever signature at Aston Villa. In the summer of 2016, the Bournemouth captain agreed to drop down a division for £3 million.

After a shaky Premier League year with The Cherries, Elphick’s place in the first team was under threat the following year. Hence, a move back to the EFL Championship, where he previously had success, bringing Bournemouth from the ashes of League One to Premier League mid-table in two seasons.

Villa Verdict:

I am not exactly in favor of moving Elphick to a promotion rival on loan. Unless a permanent deal is struck, or the terms are very favorable to Aston Villa financially, he should stay on at the club. Even if that means he’s fourth-choice center back.

One injury to James Chester and Villa supporters will watch John Terry and Chris Samba attempt to play three matches in one week at the ages of 36 and 33, respectively.
