Following a 2-1 victory over Colchester United in the first-round, Aston Villa drew Wigan Athletic at home in the next round. The Claret and Blues host The Latics the week commencing August 21st.

Aston Villa will host League One side Wigan Athletic in two short weeks. Wednesday’s encouraging 2-1 victory allows another run-out for several youth players with another Carabao Cup draw.

The complete draw can be found here.

The draw left several clubs baffled, via The Guardian. The Southern section was switched around incorrectly, leaving several clubs unsure whether they were drawn away or home. Humorous exchanges between Brentford and QPR’s official Twitter account lightened the draw. Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace even agreed to meet half-way in a funny thread.

More from Claret Villans

For Aston Villa, the draw really could not have been any better. If asked, I would say “lower league side” and “at home” would be the best available permutation. Villa achieved both conditions with newly-relegated Wigan Athletic.

The Latics are off to a 2-0-0 start to their season with an opening League victory over Aaron Tshibola’s MK Dons. They followed that up with a 2-1 Carabao Cup defeat of Blackpool.

As a seeded club, Villa avoided a match-up against Premier League competition.

The seven Premier League teams participating in European competition will enter the draw in the third-round. If results go their way, there is still a slight chance Aston Villa could be a seeded club in the next draw.

However, it will require a few upsets from the lower-level sides. Next up, Aston Villa travels to Wales in a league match against Cardiff City. The match takes place Saturday, August 12, 2017. Reading away follows closely thereafter mid-week. Three away matches in one week!
