The Irish Sun reported Aston Villa is “leading the race” for Newcastle United forward Daryl Murphy. Aston Villa might be looking to double-up on its Irish contingent with both Glenn Whelan & Murphy.

The Republic of Ireland international Daryl Murphy is available from Newcastle United.

The 34-year old made 15 league appearances last season with The Toons following a late August move. Murphy’s season stats can be found here. He was mildly productive in limited action – 688 minutes in total, not including cup competitions.

More from Claret Villans

Newcastle’s high-flying attack created a glut of goals at St. James’ Park – Murphy contributing five of them in the Championship.

Daryl Murphy’s a bit of a late-bloomer in the footballing world. His first truly successful season, at least in terms of scoring, occurred in 2012/2013 with Ipswich Town. In that year the Irishman bagged 7 in 39 Championship appearances.

2014, however, was a career year. Murphy netted 27 Championship goals with Ipswich Town. En route, Murphy became a regular with Ireland team after a six year hiatus between 2014 and 2008. Since then, the 6’2″ forward has been a mainstay in Martin O’Neill’s squads.

With Ireland very much in the fight for a World Cup 2018 spot, Murphy surely wants match time to ensure more call-ups.

Murphy should be a good target for a number of teams in the Championship as a veteran scorer. His ability to play anywhere along a front three could play well into a 4-3-3 system.

Verdict:

Steve Bruce actually managed Daryl Murphy at one point in his career. While the manager at Sunderland, Bruce pushed Murphy away on loan to Ipswich.

I see it unlikely Murphy makes a move to Aston Villa. The Claret and Blues have a plethora of striking options. The need for a 34-year old isn’t really there unless the price is a one-year deal at a steep discount.
