Aston Villa star striker Jonathan Kodjia underwent ankle surgery just six weeks ago. Despite the seriousness of the break, the 19-goal man was spotted boxing to increase foot agility.

The Birmingham Mail has a cool little video here that shows Jonathan Kodjia doing a little sparring. The video doesn’t say where it takes place, but most likely it’s the Villa training ground. Kodjia underwent surgery for a broken ankle in Belgium just six weeks ago.

He seems to be moving really well. A little sparring should go a long way in recovering lost foot speed from the injury. Based on the evidence provided, Kodjia is most likely jogging and lifting as well.

Does this put him ahead of schedule? Definitely – based on the initial prognosis. Jonathan Kodjia was originally slated to miss 4-6 months with 4 really being on the shorter end. In that scenario, he would miss at least the first month or two of the upcoming English Championship season.

He won’t be back in time to begin full pre-season training, but the outlook today is far more positive.

His increased training load may have consequences on Steve Bruce’s transfer plans too. A new striker could be put behind several other needs if Kodjia’s layoff is shorter than originally estimated.

Scott Hogan, RHM, Keinan Davis, and Gabby can lead the line for a handful of matches to start the year. A quick start to the season is imperative for promotion chances.
