Ritchie De Laet’s maiden season at Aston Villa did not go exactly as planned. The Belgian defender tore knee ligaments just three matches into his claret and blue career.

Ritchie De Laet was among Roberto Di Matteo’s final signings of the summer – joining Aston Villa after the season began. The former Manchester United player took up his usual right back position ahead of Alan Hutton and Leandro Bacuna.

His inclusion is marked with one yellow card and 2.7 aerial duels won per match.

Many supporters and pundits felt De Laet’s inclusion really would solidify the club. Right back was a position that haunted the club for close to a decade. Unfortunately, for Villa, it was short-lived as De Laet tore knee ligaments against Brentford back in September.

More from Claret Villans

Alan Hutton may have found the form of his life to close out the season, but it would be foolish to expect more at the age of 34.

In comes the return of Ritchie De Laet, a player used to the rigors of the Championship while at Leicester City and various loan moves. In his three matches at Villa, De Laet performed reasonably well in a small sample size.

Moreover, De Laet’s versatility brings a lot for current manager, Steve Bruce to ponder. The Belgian can play all three positions along the backline. Standing at 6’1″, he can comfortably play in central defense, as well as both fullback spots.

2017-2018 Prediction: Ritchie De Laet takes the first month of next season slowly, to aid in the recovery process. Thereafter, he holds down the right back spot for the remainder of the promotion campaign.
