Steve Bruce recently extended Alan Hutton’s stay by one year via an option in the Scotland international’s contract. After a solid run of matches, Bruce rewarded the veteran noting the player’s tremendous attitude in training and around the club.

Just because the player is extending his stay does not mean his spot at right fullback is secured. Hutton faces increased competition returning for next season. For one, Ritchie De Laet will return somewhere early in next league campaign. The former Belgium international suffered a knee cruciate tear (the same one Amavi suffered) in December.

A modest return could mean De Laet comes back somewhere in the second month of the season.

Moreover, Villa transferred in former Barnsley right-back James Bree to be the future of the position. Bree, 19, selected Villa over the likes of several Premier League giants to advance his career (most notably Manchester City).
