Aston Villa among favorites to reunite with United winger Ashley Young

Former Aston Villa star Ashley Young is posted at 10/1 odds to reunite with the claret and blues. The Manchester United winger-turned-fullback is not among José Mourinho’s first choice at any position.

Ashley Young looks likely to leave Manchester United this summer. Young, 31, appeared in just 12 Premier League matches on the season after six years with the Red Devils.

Could a return to Aston Villa make sense for both parties? Possibly – depending on Young’s ambitions and length of a potential deal.

Young was an absolute star at Aston Villa prior to his £20 million move in the summer of 2011. At Villa, Young became a regular within the England set-up. Young’s mixture of blistering pace and goal-scoring prowess (nine in all competitions in four consecutive seasons) brought the top-six clubs sniffing around. Manchester United beat out Liverpool for Young’s signature that summer.

At United, Young played for Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and José Mourinho.

In recent seasons, the former Villa man transformed himself into a competent fullback – appearing on both the left and the right, as well as in occasional wingback positions.

Ashley Young could probably help Aston Villa in 2017. He might not be an automatic starter, but his ability to cover several positions is key. However, we have no idea if he even wants to leave United or the Premier League. Stoke City and Newcastle United are both ahead of Villa in terms of betting odds.

For now, it is an interesting story worth monitoring. It is probably not happening, but remembering the good times (when Aston Villa wasn’t terrible) is always nice.

Turning 32 in July, anything more than a two-year deal for Ashley Young runs added risk.
