Aston Villa principal owner Dr. Tony Xia confirmed the club has just £1 million to spend this summer. This amount comes about after fears of Financial Fair Play regulations in the English second division.

Steve Bruce has just £1 million to work with this summer. This sounds worrying, but it is really not.

The amount is in excess of players sales in the summer window. Luckily for Villa, nearly a whole squad is ready for the warming embraces of another team.

Among the names most likely to move on, include: Jordan Veretout, Carles Gil, Micah Richards, Tommy Elphick, Jordan Amavi, Carlos Sanchez, Aaron Tshibola, Ross McCormack, and several youth players.

More from Claret Villans

We’ve seen the likes of Jerell Sellars, Rory Hale, Tom Leggett, and Niall Mason leave already.

Aston Villa’s heavily wasteful spending of the last four-ish years really pigeon-holed the club into this situation. In the tweets above, Xia confirmed that a smarter, leaner model of transfer spending is in the works.

Among Roberto Di Matteo’s transfers, only Jonathan Kodjia, Mile Jedinak, and James Chester succeeded in their maiden season in the claret and blue shirt.

What does this represent for Villa this summer? Not much. Steve Bruce may work the loan market for 2-3 additional players + a couple signings. Reports out of England indicate Sam Johnstone is nearing a return to Bodymoor Heath via season-long loan. José Mourinho gave Bruce a green light for the Manchester United goalkeeper.

I’m sure Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek would look excellent in a Villa shirt.

Whatever happens this summer, Xia is correct. A new transfer model at Villa Park was needed six years ago. Too much dead money is tied up in the wage bill.
