No, Jermain Defoe is not coming to Aston Villa
By Josh Tonti
Aston Villa remain among the betting favorites to land Jermain Defoe at 8/1 odds. No matter the odds, Defoe will not be joining Villa this summer for several important reasons.
Jermain Defoe is 34 and still really, really good at football.
Defoe is the football equivalent of an apocalypse shelter. Seemingly every year the England goalscorer scores 12+ Premier League goals. This season is no different as Defoe has 14 goals in 34 appearances for Sunderland.
Unfortunately, the black cats went Aston Villa’s route and have been relegated to the Championship. As is customary, many of Sunderland’s finer players will find new homes in the summer – Defoe chief among them.
More from Claret Villans
- Aston Villa dismiss Everton for first win of Premier League season
- Tyrone Mings injured in Aston Villa’s season-opening 5-1 defeat
- Aston Villa draw Hibernian or FC Luzern for Europa Conference League play-off
- Aston Villa sign winger Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen
- Aston Villa close in on deal to sign Pau Torres from Villareal
Several reasons exist on why Jermain Defoe will not be joining Aston Villa this summer. The very first being, Defoe is determined to win a spot in the England squad for the 2018 World Cup.
He’s certainly not going to do that playing in the Championship, deserving or not.
Forward spots in the England squad are crazy competitive with: Rooney, Rashford, Vardy, Defoe, Redmond, Kane, Sturridge, Sterling, Walcott, and a host of others competing for no more than six spots.
Jermain Defoe’s best bet is to stick it out in the Premier League one more season. Preferably, with another struggling team he can start and score at consistently.
Moreover, while Defoe seems like a Steve Bruce type of player, he may be unwilling to spend the waning days of his peak career in the second division.
A lethal finisher in the eighteen, Defoe may not fit in well with both Jonathan Kodjia and Scott Hogan in the same squad. There won’t be enough minutes to go around for three players who want to start every single match.
While it’s not impossible Defoe makes the move to Bodymoor Heath, the facts do not back-up the odds.
